Interior Design Wall Decoration

Contemporary Wall Decoration - Cool Stuff!

Contemporary wall decoration is fun to shop for, decorate with and even create yourself!

I've created some pretty neat wall art if I say so myself! One of my favorite projects consisted of first buying 5 qty-- 5" x 5" x 1 1/2" blank white canvases.

I then used an inch wide brush to create some interesting squares and rectangles with the chosen paint colors.

After deciding which colors I really wanted to jump off the canvas (in this case bright yellow and an orange red), I then added extra water to a small amount of yellow and orange red.

I proceeded to "splash paint" dots of the colors on top of the existing images (by flicking the wet paint coated brush). The 5 canvases can definitely be defined as "contemporary wall decoration" and they look great!

One really nice thing about this unusual size canvas--it can be displayed either vertically or horizontally. I especially like them displayed vertically when trying to highlight a beam, or a narrow area of a wall with a high ceiling. The visual look of the vertical display catches attention and makes the space appear larger. Why not try this project yourself?

Designer Diane Gordy customizes a Chevy Chase condominium with bold, unexpected accents

A baby grand piano and a lifelike sculpture by Duane Hanson dominate the bay of windows.
When interior designer Diane Gordy opens the door of her condominium in Chevy Chase, Maryland, visitors enter an elegant aerie 15 floors above the gridlocked streets and swanky shops below. One’s gaze passes through the interior space to leafy green treetops, blue sky and billowing clouds beyond.

It was this panorama that attracted Gordy to the property on her first visit. “I loved the view…and the potential for strong symmetry,” she says. As a seasoned designer, Gordy recently returned to school for a Masters in Architecture. So once she and her husband eventually moved into the apartment, she began with the bones, modifying the floor plan to suit their lifestyle. “I moved walls so everything was as symmetrical as it could be,” she recalls. To achieve this, she seized footage from the living room and added it to the sitting room, much to the astonishment of her contractor.

In her home office, Diane Gordy displays antique analytiques, which convey her love of all things architectural.
Once the revised layout was in place, Gordy set out to furnish the home based on her husband’s affinity for luxury-hotel living. “He’s a businessman with a strong sense of style,” she says. Traditional furnishings, lush fabrics and antiques appoint the interior spaces, which consist of a foyer, living room, home office, master bedroom and bath and a sitting room that doubles as a guest room.

In the sitting room, a stylized club chair and ottoman sit in front of a vintage poster by Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello.
Viewed from the foyer, the living room is diamond-shaped with a bay of windows at the point. “Most people are quite flummoxed by what to do with a bay,” Gordy notes. The answer in this case came with her husband’s desire for a baby grand piano. “He wants a baby grand in every home,” she explains. “Not that we play or entertain that much, but when we do, he will hire jazz musicians, usually a duo. So it is important for him to have this beautiful monster.” A lifelike sculpture of a concert violinist by Duane Hanson interacts with room, the furnishings and the décor, just as the artist intended. Turning the “monster” piano into an asset, Gordy amplified the theme with doors and moldings in “black, high-gloss luster” appointed with brass, enriching these functional elements rather than ignoring them or allowing them to detract from her décor.

A formal foyer with cherry floors and a marble-topped table ushers guests into the home.

A decorative artist brought the sky inside, painting the living room ceiling blue with puffy clouds. Walls were painted a rich cinnamon—originally the base for a striae treatment. But Gordy loved the depth in the warm tone and abandoned the original plan. Sisal carpet is installed on the floor. “If the mood should ever arise to throw a rug on top, it will work beautifully,” the designer explains.

Gordy converted an old sea captain’s chest into a powder room vanity, outfitted with a small bar sink.
On each of the two interior living room walls, Gordy has placed large mirrors to reflect the changing views throughout the day. Deftly placed Regency pier tables on both sides of the room, each flanked by a pair of chairs, fragment the reflection so guests don’t see their own images in the mirrors’ expanse.

There is no formal dining room in the residence because, says Gordy, “We never eat in.” In the space adjacent to the living room that would typically be reserved for a dining room, Gordy created a home office that she shares with her husband. Walls are lined with storage cabinets and a large desk runs down the center of the room. One side of the desk is high-tech for her; the other is low-tech for him. Antique analytiques (elevation drawings of a façade) grace the wall above the desk, conveying Gordy’s love of all things architectural.

Another design adaptation to their personal lifestyle is the sitting room on the opposite side of the living room. Gordy’s husband is a late riser and she is an early bird, “which is why all our homes are designed with a sitting room,” says the designer (who also owns apartments in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and West Palm Beach, Florida). This room is a place to read or watch television, and for Gordy to build models at the drafting table by the window. In one corner, a stylized club chair and ottoman sit in front of a vintage poster by Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello. A leather Chesterfield sofa converts to a bed for overnight guests.

In this apartment, privacy comes with the height of the building. “I don’t have window treatments,” Gordy says. “There is nothing in the living room, a black sunshade in the office and a woven wood shade in the sitting room.”

In the bedroom, a row of custom screens with cherry frames and insets of antique lace control light. A duvet in a Scalamandré ribbon pattern “is soft and yet it has some vigor” against the Belgian Blue walls by Sherwin Williams.

Throughout her home, Diane Gordy has veered from the expected. She has created a retreat full of personal style and sophistication—with views beyond compare.

Contributing editor Barbara Karth resides in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Photographer Angie Seckinger splits her time between Potomac, Maryland, and Spain.

A Georgetown house is upgraded for the present without losing its sense of the past

The husband’s cherry-paneled study centers on four chairs originally designed by Brown Davis for the British Embassy.
For two decades, the Georgetown couple walked past a Colonial Revival brick house near Tudor Place and wished it could be theirs. “We admired the simplicity and elegance of the architecture,” says the attorney husband. “The home is somewhat unique because it is freestanding rather than a row house. It came with one of the deepest gardens in Georgetown.”

When he and his wife, a telecommunications consultant, discovered their dream home was finally for sale, they jumped to buy it. The interiors needed updating so they turned to Rob Brown and Todd Davis, who had remodeled rooms in their previous house. “They know how to integrate clean, modern furnishings with older homes in which the preservation of the historic details is essential,” says the wife. Brown and Davis, who have offices in Bethesda and Miami Beach, are best known for decorating the Washington, DC, and Chappaqua, New York, homes of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton’s former Senate office.

The contemporary was revamped by Poggenpohl.
Hardly the typical Washingtonians whose conservative tastes run to wing chairs and Oriental rugs, the well-traveled homeowners prefer more stylish, pared-down designs. “In essence, we are Bauhaus admirers,” says the husband. “We dislike clutter, excessive ornamentation and overly decorated spaces.” At the same time, he and his wife appreciate the historic charm of Georgetown and made sure renovations respected the architectural character of their 1883 home. “The challenge was to find the right balance between preserving the best of a 19th-century structure and furnishing it with designs that are clean, simple and elegant,” he says.

Brown and Davis addressed both modernity and history by setting sleek furnishings into rooms outlined in elegant architectural details of their own making. “The façade is gorgeous but the interiors did not match that,” says Brown. “To either side of the central hallway was a jumble of rooms. It was time to give the house new life.” On the main level, archways between the hallway and flanking spaces were widened and raised to improve flow. A small room behind the living space was replaced with a coat closet and a powder room with a sculptural stone sink.

At the rear, the kitchen was completely overhauled by Poggenpohl with contemporary cabinets, glass backsplashes and stainless-steel appliances. It now opens to the rebuilt back porch overlooking the terraced garden and pool. The room across the hall from the kitchen was framed in new paneling and built-in cabinetry to create a family space. Chairs and sofas were recycled from the couple’s previous home and reupholstered to provide comfortable seating for reading and watching TV.

Throughout the house, the décor reflects what Brown and Davis call “classical contemporary,” a luxurious but streamlined look that has become their signature. “One of our trademarks is the juxtaposition of old and new, and bringing colors together in unexpected ways,” Davis says.

In the master bedroom, Donghia wallpaper provides a dark backdrop to light-colored furnishings and a sleek stone fireplace mantel.

The more formal rooms at the front of the house exemplify this mix of traditional and modern elements. In the living room, Brown and Davis replaced the fireplace mantel with a carved limestone surround and installed new architectural moldings to create a classical backdrop to stylized, Deco-inspired furnishings. Instead of pairing sofas around the fireplace, they arranged seating areas at either end of the room and connected them with a floral-patterned carpet of their own design. “It was inspired by a late 19th-century Chinese import rug for another client,” explains Brown. “The furniture has a Deco flair and in terms of Deco interiors, Chinese rugs were often used.” Ivory upholstery on the chairs and sofas provides a contemporary twist within the room’s traditional setting.

Across the hall, a similar contrast is evident in the dining room, which also serves as a music room for the couple’s three children. A baby grand piano faces upholstered chairs pulled up to a rosewood table and a banquette in front of the windows. As in the living room, the piano and furnishings are linked by a large rug in subdued tones to match the upholstery. In both living and dining rooms, marigold silk draperies add a jolt of color. “These rooms tend to be dark because they face north,” says Brown. “We chose a golden tone to warm them up.”

Abstract prints by noted American artists Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Serra, and large paintings by Spanish artists Miguel Angel Campano and José Freixanes underscore the contemporary feeling. “We think the art reinforces the importance of simple furnishings—the furnishings do not collide visually with the art,” says the husband.

Upstairs in his study, Brown and Davis extended the same strategy applied to the living and dining rooms, but reversed the approach. Instead of ornamenting the walls with intricate moldings, they used streamlined cherry paneling and shelving as a modern backdrop to traditional furnishings, including four chairs the designers originally created for the British Embassy.

Contrast continues in the master bedroom, where light-colored bedding, drapes and upholstery are set off by raisin-colored silk wallpaper. “We were asked to make it a cocoon,” says Davis. “So we used materials to absorb sound from the street.”At one end of the room, a print by British artist Henry Moore hangs over a fireplace framed in a simple stone surround. “It’s our favorite room, especially in winter with the fireplace burning,” says the husband. “We are often there, reading or working late at night when the house and the city outside are quiet.”

Washington, DC-based Deborah K. Dietsch is the author of Live/Work: Working at Home, Living at Work. Photographer William Cunningham is based in New York City.
In the living room off the stair hall, Brown and Davis unified the seating groups with a Chinese-inspired rug of their own design.

are often asked about the origins of the profession – in the context of quality of life versus product. Has our modern quality of life driven our craving for high-quality design, or has design been more of a primary impactor in defining how they enjoy wellness? In this editorial, I will draw on my experience in London’s prestigious interior design
community to reflect on how the design system works from this point of view.

When interior designers start engaging with a potential client, they will often ask about function. What is the desired purpose and use of the room or residence? The answer to this query has a profound impact on everything they do. If a client is desperate for luxury high-end London extravagance in the form of a damask settee, they may recommend a synthetic damask fabric in lieu of cotton or satin for a household that includes young kids and a pet dog. Breathtaking interior designs are always the objective, but only in the context of compatibility with our clients’ unique London lifestyles.

Interior designers will work hard to understand client requirements from the beginning. Some professional London Interior Design consultancies will even have a series of highly structured interview questions that they routinely use. The interior designer will offer a free consultation at the client’s home – whether inside or outside London – to discover exactly what the client loves and hates about their current residence. Budget should be a conversation point from the outset. It is important to clarify whether the client prefers to be given fifteen different interior design options from which to select, or one or two.

In recent years, the London interior design community has seen a real upwelling in terms of social media and internet-enabled design opportunities. Two of the most positive results is that would-be clients are now much better informed regarding interior design themes and concepts. Londoners read articles like this two and start to get a sense of the interior design system even before they reach their front door or exchange our first set of emails!

Two area that can be challenging for the interior designer is when a husband and wife have different ideas about the desired outcome. This can happen regardless of whether the individuals are happily married or thinking about an imminent separation. The interior designer sometimes gets “caught in the middle,” which can cause real tension.
